When I Was Ten, Hoola Hoops Were All The Rage
Hoola Hoops were all the rage in the summer of 1958. Most of the girls in our neighborhood owned one. We were constantly playing with them everyday, learning new techniques on how to use them. We would spin the hoop out so that it would come back to us, much like a boomerang. It was one of the original traditional toys that came from our era and we loved playing with it.
We would start twirling them at the ankles and work them all the way up our bodies till we had it spinning on one finger, then back down to the ground. We would jump them like jump ropes. We turned out to be good with them actually that we decided to enter a contest that was being held on Main Street.
We could not wait till that day when we could show off our tricks and expertise. When the day finally arrived, we clamored out of the house and up the street to the center of town. There were all kinds of competitors there with every color of Hoola Hoop you could imagine. One by one, each child tried to prove that they were the best. In the end, I remember that my best friend had won the contest. I was disappointed that I did not win, but was happy for her.
